If you’re missing the snow this summer, fear not – there is plenty of the deep powder skiing to be had in the Southern Hemisphere.  And arguably the best place to ski in summer is the central Chilean Andes; famed for it’s consistent (and big) storms and endless terrain this is explorative heli skiing at its best.

The Chilean heli skiing season runs between mid-June and October and if you do make it over for a Southern Hemisphere ski experience then we would highly recommend making the most of your trip and taking a little more time to discover some of the other adventurous wonders this South American sliver has to offer during its winter months.

Here are our Top 5 Things Not to Miss on your trip to Chile:

One.   HOT SPRINGS – there are more than 270 hot springs throughout Chile, many of which are located at the foot of the snow-capped mountains. Immerse yourself in the waters of 30°C and maybe treat yourself to a hot stone massage whilst enjoying a pampering day out.

Pure Powder Tip: The Jahuel Hot Springs are close to El Ingenio Lodge and are a world-class amenity for any heli ski trip!  What better way to end a trip than with a cold beer in the refreshing springs?

Two.   HORSE RIDING – Having spent days gliding through the untouched powder on the tops of the Andes skiing, why not hop on horseback to explore some of the lower folds? You can trek for a full day by horseback, stopping to make a little base camp somewhere where you’ll help prepare an exquisite traditional Chilean BBQ for your lunch.

Four.   DOG SLED TOURING – that’s right, you don’t have to be in the North or South Pole to enjoy this once in a lifetime experience! You can get yourself booked onto a 3-night trip where not only will you be carted around by six dogs but you will actually be taught how to navigate your own sleigh.

Five.   WINTER HIKING – Heading to Las Torres Del Paine, Patagonia in the south of Chile you will find lots more adventurous activities in this National Park which is renowned for its beauty. Discover the azure lakes, mountain trails and never ending panoramas.  The park is open all year round and with the winter season being off-peak you can take advantage of the lower prices.

A little further afield…

If you have a bit more time on your hands then take advantage of a trip to San Pedro de Atacama, a small town situated on an arid high plateau.  This is the driest place on earth and a fantastic staging post for a whole number of tours including visiting local Geisers, salt lakes (with resident Flamingos), hot springs, traditional market villages and the Moon Valley – where you can sand board if you are feeling adventurous!  Stay at the Tierra Atacama Hotel & Spa for a truly pampered experience.
